Private William J. DuttonĀ entered the Balkans Theatre of War on 28th June 1915 (Gallipoli campaign). He died on 4th October 1915. He was evacuated from ANZAC cove before succumbing to wounds and he is buried in Alexandria (Chatby) Cemetery.
The diary entry for that day says:
About 0900 enemy commenced a severe rifle and shell fire on the trenches all along the line. Being in reserve we were ordered to’ stand to’ ready to move. About 1000 the firing abated and the Battn continued with work in hand, improving and enlarging dugouts; one man was wounded whilst sitting in the trench.
Private DuttonĀ has been commemorated on this war memorial as he is listed on the 1911 census as working as a gardener in the Bersham area on the Plas Power estate
